New technology cannot rely on first impressions alone. Most everyone (especially those who read reports like this one) have seen at least one movie using modern 3D technology, either active or passive. This lends the images a “view-master” quality; only in scenes that truly benefit from the ability do we forget that it is there.

First and foremost, is there an established standard for creating a 3D image? Meaning: if my ABC brand 3D TV uses a different encoding profile from my XYZ brand 3D TV will I need to watch two different channels in order to see the same show in 3D?

If that is the case then I suspect that glasses purchased for one manufacturer’s unit would not function with another. Realize the potential of this: the cost of replacement or additional glasses suddenly is multiplied. Also recognize that there will inevitably be an arena for after-market 3D glasses; both for special needs (children, physical deformity, etc) and for enthusiasts who might want a designer model (either for fashion or improved performance).

One other item before I conclude: every use of 3D that I have seen (both in theaters and at CES) have been carefully situated, staged in such a way that there was minimal glare, light infiltration or other environmental considerations.

As the physical units of non-HD and CRT physical televisions are replaced and slowly phase themselves out of use, we may see televisions sold being 3D-ready. But are consumers ready to have their brand-new HD televisions become obsolete so very soon. Will 3D video infiltrate “normal” television or will it be limited to movies and special events?

The “Presentation Master Pocket Tool” from Victorinox is a modified version of the famous small pocket knife often carried on a keyring.

One major item that requires substantial work: the “secure data encryption technology allowing you to protect those files since they can only be accessed by recognition of your fingerprint” (quoted directly from the swissarmy.com web site) is lacking. During our time with the Presentation Master one member of our team participated in a contest that was running at the booth; open a file on one of their USB sticks and get the reward. The rules were simple: two hours maximum and anything goes, with the exception of simple dumb luck (i.e. guessing the password).

A note from this post’s author: I am not, nor have I ever been, a hacker, cracker, white hat, grey hat, black hat, script kiddie or hacktivist. The extent of my experience with hacking comes entirely from movies and television.
My attempt was childish and brutal; all the while, I kept trying that fingerprint scanner… until I got a new message, asking me to create a log-in. I swiped my own finger and created a new password. I was “in”. The application allowed me to select the encrypted file and click “open”, then asked for a file-specific password — it is my belief that if I had a dictionary or brute-force cracking application (still allowed under their rules) this password would have fallen quickly. The engineers on hand seemed to be surprised at my success, especially with my obvious amateur attempts.

Our hope is that before the Presentation Master Pocket Tool is released, some additional work is done with the security software.

Even though Microsoft went well out of their way to NOT give us any details on the next version of Windows Home Server (WHS) at CES, Paul Thurrott, author of the SuperSite for Windows and weekly host on Windows Weekly with Leo LaPorte, hinted at the fact that WHS v2 will be out sometime this year.

Google is down right fed up with communist China. A firm believer in the Open Internet movement, Google is taking it to the man and sticking up for uncensored search results. And it’s no wonder they’re sick of all the censorship; there’s just too much shady activity coming from the East. Somehow Chinese hackers have found a way to peer into email accounts of users who are advocates of human rights. And no, Google isn’t handing over the user information, but rather the computers of those effected have had built in phishing software – giving backdoor access to the attackers, keeping a watchful eye on the user’s activity like a creepy cyber big brother – “Dude, stop looking at my screen!” So much for privacy policy.

I… want… this.

The VB3 was designed by dmvA, a Belgium architectural team who focus on achieving maximalism with minimalism. In other words they try to get as much done as they possibly can with minimal resources. Its uses are only limited by whatever your imagination can come up with. Need a home office? Or how about a trendy storage unit? Since it’s mobile it really can be placed anywhere it’s needed, such as a backyard or even an open field. Built with all of life’s necessities such as a kitchen, shower, sleeping area, and optimal storage space, this egg of a home is perfect for the minimalist who wants to simplify yet still have access to everything he needs.

So here’s the situation: You got your iPhone and you’ve just taken some amazing footage of your family on vacation, or your cat dancing to the moves of “Thriller”, and now you want to share that video with everyone you know. But you don’t know how; Yes, there’s an “upload to youtube” feature on the iPhone, but the video won’t be in the rich quality you want everyone to see it in. Not only that, but what if you just want to have the file on your computer to do what you want with it – having it on the phone itself just limits you and who you can show it to since once a video has gone over a certain file size it can’t be emailed or MMS’d. And iTunes can’t help you here either.

The question then lies, how do you move these files to your PC?

Google is rolling out the ability to upload all file types to the cloud through Google Docs, giving you one place where you can upload and access your key files online.

How will this effect paid file sharing? Will it cause new vulnerabilities and more ways to distribute malware? Will more people be able to share pirated material?

The first Bioshock was a game of absolute substance; with a mesmerizing hard exterior and an oozing jelly filled center, it never let up – err, well… that is until the campaign was over. I remember playing through it twice and loving the experience, but was saddened, like many other players, to find there was no multiplayer – local or online. This was a big deal, especially at the time of its release since it was going up against Halo 3 and COD4 – games weighted with massive amounts of online gameplay. Because of that one lacking feature the game’s price tag of $60 seemed too steep, and a purchase didn’t feel justifiable.

2K is not letting that happen again.

Several companies celebrated their home automation systems at the Consumer Electronics Show. All of them had the basically the same functionality: turn on and off various systems, i.e. your lights, televisions, air conditioning, pool heater, runway lights and space elevator. (No space elevator? For shame.)
